06/20/08 CBPP: Employment, Foreclosure, & Poverty Data Identify 29 States in Need of Fiscal Relief
States across the country have projected budget shortfalls totaling at least $48 billion for 2009. To meet their balanced budget requirements, they are being forced to raise taxes and/or cut expenditures - both of which reduce overall demand and thereby weaken the impact of the recent federal stimulus package. Federal fiscal relief would limit the need for such actions.

07/23/08 As close to Impeachment as we've been so far!
This Friday, July 25th, the House Judiciary Committee will convene a hearing called "Executive Power and Its Constitutional Limitations." While not defined explicitly as a hearing on the articles of impeachment that Rep. Dennis Kucinich has put forth, this is the closest we've seen to a formal discussion on Capitol Hill related to the issue of impeachment. Click here for the AP article explaining what's happening.

7/23/07- Grilling FEMA Over Its Toxic Trailers
The bloody noses started almost immediately. Paul Stewart, a former police officer and first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, completely lost his home when Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. That December, the Federal Emergency and Management Agency (FEMA) gave Stewart and his wife a trailer to live in. The first night they slept in it, she woke up with blood coming out of her nose. Then he started developing troubling respiratory symptoms — burning eyes, coughing, a constantly scratchy throat. One morning, they awoke to find CiCi, their pet cockatiel, half-dead. All the symptoms pointed to formaldehyde poisoning. Read the article from Time Magazine here.
7/23/07- Senate Panel Approves Huge Tobacco Tax To Fund Child Healthcare
In an overwhelming majority of 17 to 4, and in defiance of a threatened veto by President Bush, the US Senate Finance Committee approved a bill to expand child healthcare using a large increase in tobacco tax. Most of the Republicans on the Committee joined the Democrats to vote in favour of the bill. The current legislation for the State Children's Health Insurance Program, SCHIP, is due to expire at the end of September. Read the article from Medical News here.
7/24/07- Sheehan Arrested in Impeachment Protest
Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Monday at the Capitol for disorderly conduct, shortly after saying she would run against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over the California Democrat's refusal to try to impeach President Bush. Sheehan was taken into custody inside Rep. John Conyers' office, where she had spent an hour imploring him to launch impeachment proceedings against Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Conyers, D-Mich., chairs the House Judiciary Committee, where any impeachment effort would have to begin. Read the Washington Post article here.
7/25/07- Big Oil: Another Profit Record in Sight
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- There's rarely been a better time to be a refiner. In the second quarter, refiners bought crude oil at lower prices and sold gasoline at record high prices. As a result, companies like Exxon Mobil, Chevron, and Valero could see record profits when the industry reports earnings this week. Read the CNN Money article here.
7/25/07- State's economy drives more kids into poverty
Michigan's troubled economy contributed to a 36 percent jump in the number of children living in poverty between 2000 and 2005, as an additional 116,000 children slipped below the poverty line. More than 479,000 of Michigan's 2.5 million children were living in poverty in 2005, up from about 363,000 in 2000, the annual KIDS COUNT report released today indicates. The survey tracks child well-being nationally. Read the article from M Live here.
7/25/07- Higher city temps blamed on global warming
Chicago is feeling the heat: In 2006, the average temperature in the Windy City was 52.1, three degrees above normal. Temperatures are up again this year in Illinois as well, and will most likely continue to rise here and elsewhere, according to a report released Tuesday by the Environment Illinois Research and Education Center, which blames the increase on global warming. 7/25/07- Iraq Contractors on Notice About Labor Abuse
Sam McCahon proposed a simple solution to convince US-funded contractors working in Iraq to return passports to their migrant workers. Reaching in his pocket, the candid government contract lawyer pulled out a clip of folded US dollars and held it up. “This works,” he said, speaking at a conference on labor trafficking in Washington, DC, sponsored last week by the International Peace Operations Association, a trade group of private contractors specializing in military support services. McCahon pointed out that when businesses in the Middle East realize that they will lose out on lucrative US contracts, they get the message--employees have rights when working for American taxpayers, no matter what their nationality or salaries are. Read the article from the Iraq Slogger here.
7/25/07- Justice Dept. drops massive fraud case
Two years into a fraud investigation, veteran federal prosecutor David Maguire told colleagues he'd uncovered one of the biggest cases of his career. Maguire described crimes "far worse" than those of Arthur Andersen, the accounting giant that collapsed in the wake of the Enron scandal. Among those in his sights: executives from a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, the investment empire overseen by billionaire Warren Buffett. Read the McClatchy Newspapers article here.
